Jesus Heals a Lame Man on the Sabbath
AS WE HAVE GONE THROUGH THESE COVID19 DAYS; I HAVE PRAYED AND DONE MY SOCIAL DISTANCING AND PRECAUTIONS, BECAUSE OF MY OWN “COMPROMISED” AUTOIMMUNE SYSTEMS= (TYPE2 DIABETES AND FORM OF LUPUS AND A COUPLE OTHER AUTOIMMUNE “MONSTERS” INSIDE OF ME)…I WONDERED WHY/HOW “HUMAN BEINGS” CAN FORGET STUFF, SO QUICKLY AND EASILY AND ALSO GO TO CHURCHES MANY TIMES PER WEEK AND “HEAR THE WORDS” OF THE PREACHERS/TEACHERS, AND YET ‘WE SEEM TO NEVER LEARN STUFF/PASS IT ONWARD/AND KEEP REPEATING THE SAME THINGS OVER AND OVER AND OVER; “MISTAKES AND SUCCESSES” …..DO WE REALLY “HAVE THAT MUSTARD SEED BIT OF FAITH?”
Ecclesiastes 1:9 New International Version (NIV)
9 What has been will be again,
what has been done will be done again;
there is nothing new under the sun.
Ecclesiastes 1:9 is the origin of what has become a common proverb, “There’s nothing new under the sun.” The verse reads like this: “What has been will be again, / what has been done will be done again; / there is nothing new under the sun.” As a modern idiom, “there’s nothing new under the sun” is often used as a world-weary complaint against life’s monotony. When Solomon wrote the statement, he was emphasizing the cyclic nature of human life on earth and the emptiness of living only for the “rat race.”
The phrase “under the sun” is used 29 times in Ecclesiastes and nowhere else in Scripture. The intended meaning in Ecclesiastes is that what happens “under the sun” in a life separated from God is universal—the point of view in Ecclesiastes is an earth-bound perspective.
To say there is nothing new under the sun means there is nothing really new on the earth. All the activity of a man during his lifetime is lost in the grander scheme of things and will soon be forgotten (Ecclesiastes 1:11).
To say there is nothing new under the sun does not ignore inventions or advances in technology; rather, these innovations do not amount to any basic change in the world. In Solomon’s time, many advances took place in society, but, from the larger perspective of life, human nature has remained and always will remain the same.
The context of Ecclesiastes 1 discusses how the earth operates. The sun (verse 5), wind (verse 6), and water (verse 7) continue to function as they have in the past. Despite human efforts (verse 2), the world continues unchanged. Part of the writer’s frustration from this observation is that “no one remembers the former generations, / and even those yet to come / will not be remembered / by those who follow them” (verse 11). People tend to forget the past, repeating its mistakes as a result.
Does the fact that there is nothing new under the sun mean that people should not try to improve themselves, the lives of others, or the world around them? The entire book of Ecclesiastes should be read before jumping to any conclusion. In the end, Solomon writes this: “Now all has been heard; / here is the conclusion of the matter: / Fear God and keep his commandments, / for this is the duty of all mankind. / For God will bring every deed into judgment, / including every hidden thing, / whether it is good or evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:13–14).
In other words, life involves more than what happens “under the sun.” Living for God and His glory is the goal of life. Those who do not seek this goal will be judged. Even our good deeds that have gone unnoticed in this life are seen by God and will be rewarded in the future. This knowledge should result in a life lived for God, with a deep love for others and desire to make a difference.
Jeremiah 29:11 says, “‘For I know the plans I have for you,’ declares the LORD, ‘plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.’” The Great Commission also gives a specific mission for the Christian life: “Go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you” (Matthew 28:19–20). The Christian life is not meaningless. There may be nothing new under the sun, but Jesus promises, some day, to make all things new (Revelation 21:5).

POLIO AND CLEAN WATER

Today, we wonder where polio came from. The University of Houston’s College of Engineering presents this series about the machines that make our civilization run, and the people whose ingenuity created them.
The muscle-crippling disease poliomyelitis — polio for short — had just come on the American scene when I was a child. The polio virus travels in water, so my parents wouldn’t let me swim in public pools and beach areas. Indeed, one book on polio is titled The Summer Plague for just that reason. Today, polio is only a bleak memory for older Americans. It still returns to attack the muscles of its survivors as they age. But we’ve stopped seeing new cases.
Polio was pretty obscure before the twentieth century. There’d been some outbreaks in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and most victims had been under the age of four. When I was young, the disease was still called Infantile Paralysis.
The really horrific polio epidemics began in 1916. By the early ’50s it’d been striking some 30,000 people a year. Then the Salk vaccine appeared, and soon the virus was beaten.
So why did the early twentieth century produce those terrible epidemics? We had two clues, even before we knew how to deal with the virus. One was that polio attacked the middle class more than the poor. Indeed, one myth of seventy years ago said that black people didn’t get polio. The other clue lay in the increasing age of victims. Victims of the 1916 epidemic were generally older than three, but ninety-five percent were still under the age of ten. In the 1947 epidemic, almost half the victims were ten or older.
The cause of the epidemics turns out to’ve been, of all things, improved hygiene. There was a time when everyone got polio. It was in everyone’s drinking water. When it struck a very young child, the child would suffer a little diarrhea, bounce back, and then be immune. Polio was rarely severe enough at that age to cause severe damage, so we were hardly aware of it. Like measles, mumps, and chicken pox, the disease simply immunized the child.
Then, in the twentieth century, the industrial nations cleaned up their water supply systems. As they did, the general immunity disappeared. When polio did reach children over three and young adults, it didn’t just cause diarrhea. It crippled and killed them.
Polio remained incurable. Massage therapies gave some relief. Franklin Roosevelt took his polio to Warm Springs, Georgia. George Washington Carver received a grant to develop a combined massage and peanut-oil therapy at the Tuskegee Institute. The fiery Australian nurse, Sister Elizabeth Kenney, swept into the American medical establishment in 1940. Her massage therapy dominated the treatment of polio until, and after, her death in 1952.
But massage therapies were after-the-fact treatments of polio. Once we had a vaccine to prevent polio, those therapies faded from our consciousness. So the most terrifying scourge of the early twentieth century came and went. It was a disease brought on by something new in human experience. Polio was the completely unexpected result of our new clean-water delivery systems.

“IGNORANCE IS BLISS” AND HUMANS LIKE TO PROVE WE ARE SSOOOO “RELIGIOUS” AND YET NEVER GIVE “GOD”, “JESUS”, AND ‘THE HOLY SPIRIT” THE CREDIT FOR “OWNING THE SCIENCES/TECHNOLOGIES/SPIRITS/FORCES/ESSENCE/DNA/CELLS/”THE BLOOD”..THERE GOES THAT TERM “THE BLOOD” AGAIN!!!
Where would we be without blood? That red stuff that carries vital oxygen from our lungs to our muscles, and helps move our body’s chemical waste to where it can be recycled or disposed of? Blood is vital for life in humans, but did you know that not all animals have blood, and that some have blood that is very different to our own?
In fact, many small creatures, such as amoebas, sponges and corals, don’t need blood. Most of their body makes direct contact with the outside environment, which means they can survive by directly absorbing nutrients from their surroundings. Furthermore, their waste can “leak” out by a process known as diffusion. For these animals, a heart, veins, arteries and blood would be an unnecessary investment.
The innards of larger animals, like humans, don’t have such a direct link to the outside world, so absorption and diffusion are not an option. Rather, they need a transport system in their bodies that can help stuff to get in, out and around. Specifically, our bodies need to move oxygen from our lungs to our cells to produce energy by burning the sugars, fats and proteins we eat in a controlled way. To solve the transport problem, many animals have developed some kind of circulatory system, made of an oxygen- and nutrient-carrying fluid, some plumbing, and sometimes one or more pumps to keep things moving. In humans, the fluid is blood, and the plumbing is our veins, arteries and capillaries. The oxygen carrier in our blood is hemoglobin.
What is hemoglobin, and how does it work?
Hemoglobin is an incredible molecule, combining four long protein chains, four flat ring structures (known as heme) and four iron atoms, each held in the center of each heme ring. Blood’s characteristic red color comes from the combination of iron and heme. For hemoglobin to do its important work of transporting oxygen, it needs to not only pick up oxygen in the lungs, but also let go of it in the parts of the body where it is needed. It uses iron to bind the oxygen, and the rest of the hemoglobin molecule works as an efficient molecular machine to make sure the oxygen is bound loosely enough to be able to be dropped off at its destination.
The shape of the protein chains in hemoglobin control how much oxygen it binds or releases. When oxygen binds to the iron in one heme ring, it changes the shape of the four protein chains, making it easier for the other three heme groups to pick up oxygen atoms of their own (here’s a neat video that shows how this works). The protein chains are also sensitive to changes in pH and carbon dioxide concentrations, which allows oxygen to be released in actively metabolizing tissues, where the pH is low and the carbon dioxide concentration is high (like in active muscles).
Iron rusts by taking in oxygen, but hemoglobin is not like any iron nail. If you want to get the oxygen (or iron) out of the rust, you need to do some pretty fancy chemistry. But the hemoglobin molecule, on the other hand, is nature’s way of holding the iron in a delicate balance, where it is able to bind oxygen loosely and reversibly, without “rusting” permanently.
Hemoglobin is packaged into red blood cells, which are specialised delivery cells that, unlike most other cells in your body, do not contain any DNA! Human red blood cells get rid of their nucleus (where the DNA is) as they mature, which gives them more space for hemoglobin, and makes them small enough to fit through the smallest blood vessels. Red blood cells are shaped like a donut without a hole. Their shape gives them a high surface area, allowing lots of space for oxygen to pass through. They are very flexible, and can squeeze through tiny blood vessels that are roughly half their diameter.
Pretty much all animals that have backbones (vertebrates) use hemoglobin to carry oxygen around. But what about invertebrates? Let’s take a look at some alternative solutions they’ve developed for the problem of carrying oxygen. Spiders, crustaceans, octopuses, and squid, for instance, carry oxygen using a copper-based pigment known as hemocyanin, which makes their blood blue. This may seem weird, but it’s really not so surprising once you consider that creatures that look so different from us on the outside have different chemistry, too – hemoglobin is not the only answer! Unlike hemoglobin, hemocyanin is able to operate in low-oxygen environments and in the cold, making it perfect for deep sea creatures.
Some leeches and segmented worms use an iron-carrying pigment called chlorocrourin, which is particularly fun because it appears green when its diluted, and red when it is concentrated!
