Lake Mead Blvd. Mario Berlanga and the city of Las Vegas invite the community to the grand opening of the new Mario’s Westside Market Monday, Oct. 30, at 4 p.m. The new market is located at 1425 W. Lake Mead Blvd., across the parking lot from the former market building. The new market is located in a much larger building that was remodeled using American Rescue Plan Act Funds through the city of Las Vegas and $1 million in funding from Clark County. The original market opened in 1997. “I am excited for the community to experience the new and improved Mario’s Market, and I am thankful to be a part of this community and the Historic Westside,” said Mario Berlanga, the owner of the market. The market is located in Ward 5 in the city of Las Vegas. Mayor Carolyn G. Goodman, Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear, Clark County Commissioner William McCurdy II and Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Sheriff Kevin McMahill will join Berlanga in cutting the ribbon for the market. “Mario’s is an institution on the Historic Westside,” Councilman Crear said. “So many children have grown up going to Mario’s, and now they are parents bringing their children in to shop. Small businesses like Mario’s are key to continued growth and development, and I am excited to be a part of opening the news market.” Commissioner McCurdy added, “Mario’s Westside Market is special to me and many of my neighbors. From the amazing catfish and hot foods to the deli where I pick up my oxtails, Mario’s has it all. I am honored to have supported the expansion which will double the workforce and provide more fresh food in the neighborhood.” ### Las Vegas City Council Mayor Carolyn G. Joseph Loper was there to buy chicken cracklings and head cheese.
“Where else could you get cut meat the way you want it,” said Loper, a regular customer. “It’s all here.”
Mario’s is one of the few markets in Las Vegas’ “food desert” — areas where there are limited options for affordable and nutritious food in lower-income neighborhoods. It has been a fixture of the Historic Westside since 1997.

Expansion
