NOT that I am all that excited, about PRESIDENT’S DAY, now that I know some things about The American History of How Presidents have conducted themselves, especially concerning the lives of people of All Colors and other Cultures, except Caucasians.
BUT, I will hopefully Brighten your days a little bit, with “THIS/THESE precious Memories!”
So, I was probably about 3 Years old, when I noticed, That Aunt Cleo Wright, aka Formerly Cleo McKnight, MOM’S sister, used to Drive to Texarkana, Texas, on this Day (each year; until She passed away). Aunt Cleo and Uncle Ernest Wright, came from Pittsburg, Texas to Texarkana, at about 4-5 in the early mornings.
I can remember the “Sweet Smells” of “Peanut Butter Cookies”, Home made, and sometimes; “Coconut Cookies” maybe others?? Those two are still fresh in my mind..”UUMMNNN, I can just Smell them, as that smell would wake me up.
Then there was the Smell of Coffee, Tea, and sometimes Breakfast (UMNN, Bacon and Eggs and Home made Biscuits) And Gravy.
THIS “WAS” a biiggg Day for Mom and Aunt Cleo! I think my Big Sister Porter, went with them sometimes?? WELL, they had a “Shopping Party Day”.
They had Saved up their H & S Green Stamps, the Books were full, and They were ready to “Cash them In” for gifts /Loyalty products, for what they wanted. You can Read all about them here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%26H_Green_Stamps
Mom and Aunt Cleo were Certainly going to stop by: Piggly Wiggly and The F. W. Woolworth Company (often referred to as Woolworth’s or Woolworth) was a retail company and one of the original pioneers of the five-and-dime store. It was among the most successful American and international five-and-dime businesses, setting trends and creating the modern retail model that stores follow worldwide today.
They were probably going to stop by the Belk–Jones Store, but Maybe “JUST to DREAM” because Belk–Jones was more of the UPPITY Store, https://www.belk.com/shop-by-brand/jones-new-york/
The Point is that, back then it was “Washington’s Birthday” and MOM and Aunt Cleo had a BLAST, a Shopping BALL, together “Laughing and Cackling” like “Hens”/LOL-Smile.
WE, kids would not see them, until about 2-3 O’clock. and they would arrive back home laughing and Proud of their Bags of Sales captured for the families and households, to last for another year. MAN, SUCH GREAT MEMORIES OF PRESIDENT’S DAY SALES AND MY MOTHER AND MY AUNT CLEO AND MY UNCLE ERNEST DROVE THE “LIMO” AKA HIS CAR FOR TAXING THE LADIES AROUND!!!
I AM CUTTING THIS ONE KINDA SHORT AS HAPPY/LOVING MEMORY TEARS HAVE NOW WELLED UP INTO MY EYES…
YOU WOULD NEVER HAVE KNOWN HOW POOR, WE WERE, AND YET HOW “THE WHOLE VILLAGE/GRANDVIEW, SUNSET, ROBINSON CT./CIRCLE, REDWATER, ALL CONTRIBUTED TO “RAISING THE CHILDREN AND THE PEOPLE HELPED/LOVED EACH OTHER/ MY BIG SISTER’S LITTLE DANCE CAFE/TEEN-AGED STORE, WHERE WE HAD PIN BALL MACHINES, AND COUNTRY WINNER ROASTS, BY MAKING HANGERS INTO THE THING THAT COULD HOLD THE HOT DOGS OVER THE FIRE…MY SISTER’S CAFE HAD CANDY/POPS, AND THE JUKE BOXES, AND JUST “FUN” NO ALCOHOL….
