Goodman and Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear for a ribbon-cutting marking the opening of the Historic Westside Design Center at 4 p.m. Thursday, March 16, at 330 W. Washington Ave. The center is located inside the Historic Westside School. The center includes a timeline of the history of the Westside, as well as information about the HUNDRED Plan in Action, which charts a future course for the area. In addition, the suite that houses the design center also features a mural and a photo collage showcasing the community. Upcoming and ongoing projects on the Westside include urban farming, the revitalization of Jackson Avenue, a proposed African American Museum, a small business support center and a workforce training center. ### NOTE: The entrance to the Design Center is not accessible from Washington Avenue. From Washington Avenue, turn north on D Street, make a right turn in two blocks on Jefferson Street, then make a right turn on C Street. Tours of the new facility will be available until 2 p.m. Formerly known as Charleston Heights Park at 2221 Maverick St., the 3.92-acre park will offer a new community center and new amenities. The public is invited to participate in free preview programs March 13-31. Programs include: March 13, 20, 27 – 3D Printing Workshop March 14, 21, 28 – Fabrication Workshop March 15, 23 – Drone Soccer March 16 at 2 p.m. – Esports Tournament for ages 12-18 with prizes (Valorant, NBA2K; Smash Bros) March 17, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. – Esports Summit for ages 12-18, to include education workshops, Minecraft Education, livestream, panel discussion, vendors and open play. Working in partnership with UNLV Rebel Gaming, Nevada Esports Education League, Las Vegas Inferno, Storm Rush Gaming and others. Hours at the new center will be Monday-Thursday 10 a.m.-9 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m.-8 p.m.; Saturday 8 a.m.-5:30 p.m.; closed Sunday. The new center will offer a variety of classes and activities for participants ranging in age from tots to active adults. Some planned programs for seniors include Active Adult Esports, iPad for Seniors, Cybersecurity, Scams for Active Adults, Basic Computers, and a walking club. The $5.7 million project includes construction of a 5,783-square-foot community center with attached 550-square-foot park restroom building, new parking lot, basketball court, new drinking fountain, park renovations, turf areas, landscaping, new playground equipment, walking paths, site lighting and site improvements for handicapped-accessible concrete walkways. The new center will include state-of-the-art equipment in a true technology-based facility. The community center will provide the infrastructure to accommodate high-tech uses, allowing youth, as well as adults, to create computer games, participate in esports, and produce high-quality video in front of a green screen. Local youth, along with representatives of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department, deputy city marshals, local schools, esports business groups and area churches, provided input into the design of the facility. “We are excited to open this new technology center and renovated park for the community,” said Ward 5 Councilman Cedric Crear. “The facilities will offer the kind of opportunities for building skills and maintaining health that will attract youth and adults alike.” The former park restroom, tennis courts and park features have been demolished. However, great care has been taken by the architect KNIT to preserve as many existing trees as possible and to add new landscaping. Cobblestone Construction is the contractor; work began in June 2021, funded by the Residential Construction Tax, bonds and the city of Las Vegas General Fund.
