I HAD A DISCUSSION WITH MY WIFE, THE OTHER DAY, ABOUT THAT “STAR TREK” (AGAIN; Roddenberry; WAY, WAY BEYOND HIS TIME)… DID NOT USE “MONEY/CURRENCY” ANY LONGER AND “GREED & HUNGER” WAS/WERE A NON-FACTOR… SHE PUZZLED HERSELF AND SAID THEY HAD TO HAVE SOME TYPE OF CURRENCY.. A lot of science fiction shows present a darkly dystopian view of the future, where humans battle for limited resources, starkly divided between the haves and have-nots. But some views of the future are far more utopian. In “Star Trek,” members of the federation live in a post-money society: Everyone has the basics, nobody has to work, and ordering what you need is as easy as telling a replicator, “Tea. Earl Grey. Hot.”
As Trekkies get excited for “Picard,” the latest “Star Trek” franchise, we thought we’d dive deeper on how that society works. It’s the latest in our ongoing series exploring how tech and the economy are portrayed in science fiction.

The article states:

I disagree. In Star Trek: First Contact, Picard clearly states that not only does money not exist, but that people are not paid for their work, because they work to “better themselves”, and not for a salary. In an episode of DS9 (I forget which), Jake Sisko tells Nog that, as a Federation citizen, he has no financial ressources whatsoever.
Clearly, the very concept of money is meaningless on Federation worlds. Remember that this is a utopia, and it’s often been stated that Humans (and other Federation species) no longer experience greed or self-centredness (in VOY: “Future’s End”, for example, or in that TNG episode where they revive several frozen people from the 21st century). We have to assume that people on Federation worlds contribute freely to society because they want to, and take whatever they need in return, being sufficiently advanced in ethical terms to not abuse this system. (This system exists in other utopias, including William Morris‘ News From Nowhere.)
My theory is that Starfleet officers stationed on the borders, and interacting with non-Federation species, do have some sort of monetary ressources, and that’s where Federation credits come in. WHEN A CERTAIN, SUDDEN DROP IN CABIN PRESSURE OF A PLANE OR A ENGINE FAILURE, THEN POSSIBLY BOTH ENGINES OR ALL ENGINES FAIL; “SOFT-LANDING” DEPLOYMENT CAN BE DONE AND BE BUILT INTO OUR AIRCRAFT, INTO AND AT CERTAIN SPOTS. OF COURSE, “IF”/”WHEN” SUCH “SOFT-LANDING DEPLOYMENT” HAS TO HAPPEN, PRETTY MUCH ALL FUEL AND NON-HUMAN CARGO..IE…, LUGGAGE, BAGS, WHATEVER MAY HAVE TO BE “JETTISONED” ….PASSENGER CAN “INSURE/POLICY” THEIR BELONGINGS, IF THEY WANT, TO RECOUP THEIR INVESTMENTS… BUT, BETTER TO SAVE LIVES, THAN THOSE BELONGINGS..RRIIGGHHTTT???
