This week in Aftershocks: power outages wreak economic havoc in South Africa, 14,000 Nigerians sue Big Oil in London, Africa’s health sector has a case of brain drain, and more. |
Top News Blackout: South Africa has achieved the unfortunate milestone of 100 consecutive days of rolling blackouts. Beyond the inconvenience of daily power outages, the crisis is disrupting the water supply and has been associated with an uptick in robberies. Businesses are particularly hard hit, with some passing their rising costs on to already cash-strapped consumers. The South African Central Bank estimates that the blackouts may be costing the economy as much as $51 million per day. The energy crisis marks the failure of the state-owned power utility and has become one of President Cyril Ramaphosa’s biggest political hurdles as he begins his second term. Business leaders have been particularly vocal in asking the president to make changes to his cabinet of ministers, including energy, mining, and transport. bOILing mad: Nearly 14,000 Nigerians from two communities in the Niger Delta have filed claims in the high court in London against Shell. They’re blaming the supermajor oil company for pollution that has devastated water sources and farmland. Shell, which made $39.9 billion in profits in 2022 — the highest in its 115-year history — is denying responsibility. It blames the pollution on oil thieves, and says it is not liable for the actions of its Nigerian subsidiary. A 2017 study found that infants were twice as likely to die in the first month if their mothers lived within 10 kilometres of an oil spill. Meanwhile, BP — which two decades ago tried to rebrand itself as “Beyond Petroleum” — is scaling back its climate goals in light of soaring profits. Apparently climate activists are the only ones who can afford to take the climate crisis seriously. 👀 Inciting violence: Lack of jobs is a main driver of violent extremism in sub-Saharan Africa, according to new research from UNDP. Roughly 25% of 2,200 voluntary recruits cited job opportunities as their primary reason for joining extremist groups. That’s a 92% increase from the findings of a similar 2017 UNDP study. Peer pressure from family members or friends is the second most common driver for recruitment. Women are less likely than men to join for ideological reasons and tend to join with family, in particular their husbands. Male recruits tend to join with friends. Religion was cited as the main recruitment driver by 17% of respondents, a 57% decline from the 2017 findings. An extra year in school decreases the likelihood of voluntary recruitment by 13%. Rebel rebel: Leaders of the East African Community seem to be running out of answers for how to resolve the deteriorating security situation in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. EAC leaders simply renewed calls for the immediate ceasefire and withdrawal of all foreign troops in the region. The DRC accuses Rwanda of supporting the M23 rebels and escalating tensions between the two countries. That, along with the DRC’s desire for a more aggressive approach in dealing with the rebels, is complicating the conflict mediation process. EAC leaders would do well to heed the words of Pope Francis on his recent visit: “peace will not fall from the sky.” The well-being of millions of Congolese people depends on it. Kenya believe it: It’s been a busy week in Kenya. To catch you up: Raila Odinga, who lost the August presidential election to William Ruto, continues to challenge the legitimacy of the results. The 78-year old has started a youth resistance movement, which is being billed as the “movement for defense of democracy.” The Senate is considering a bill that would force former presidents to {gasp}… pay taxes, like everyone else. The bill would instead offer tax exemptions to people with disabilities, minority groups, and marginalised groups. President Ruto has slashed the security detail of his predecessor, Uhuru Kenyatta, leading some to claim the move is rooted in politics and not “rationalisation of personnel,” as officials contend. A Kenyan court says that Facebook’s parent company, Meta, can be sued for psychological injuries that content moderators allegedly suffered after repeated exposure to graphic content Dr. Brain Drain: A new French immigration bill aimed at attracting foreign health workers could worsen the exodus of health practitioners from African countries, critics say. French-speaking Africa is already France’s second largest source of foreign health workers outside of the European Union. The ongoing brain drain of Africa’s health workers is aided by a combination of “push” factors in their home countries. These include a lack of jobs, poor working conditions, and low wages. Faced with budgetary constraints, many African governments are finding it hard to make necessary investments in their public healthcare systems, including by employing graduating doctors in the public sector. Low-income countries should spend at least 5% of their GDP and $86 per capita to ensure that all citizens have access to primary healthcare services, say health experts. Currently, only 13 African countries meet both targets. Aftershocks: African leaders have expressed solidarity with the people of Turkey and Syria in the wake of Monday’s disastrous earthquakes that killed thousands. A South African search and rescue operation, “Gift of the Givers,” has sent sniffer dogs, doctors, and aid workers while Morocco and Algeria have sent specialist equipment, rescue operations, and 115 tons of pharmaceuticals, food, and tents to affected cities. Seven South Africans were being detained in a Turkish prison when it collapsed in the quake. Freezing temperatures threaten the safe recovery of those still trapped under rubble. From the ONE Team ONE’s Gayle Smith highlights five things about 2023 that are NOT doom and gloom. ONE and partners are holding a press briefing for journalists on the Nigerian election on Monday, 13 February, 11:00 EST / 16:00 GMT / 17:00 CET & UTC. Register here. The Numbers 267,000: deaths per year in sub-Saharan Africa linked to falsified and substandard antimalarial medicines. 2: The number of Grammy categories won by African artists this year. 0.6%: Africa’s share of global investment in renewable energy in 2021 represents an 11-year low. |
